New School in Osnabrück
"Campus Rolandsmauer - a new stronghold of education in central Osnabrück"
With the new building of the New School Osnabrück at the Rolandsmauer location, a future-proof place of education is to be created in the middle of the historic Osnabrück. Up-to-date learning should be promoted in an attractive environment and, as a growing factor, should provide the greatest possible flexibility for the dynamic development around the Katharinenquartier.
The shape of a clear cubature, which fits itself confidently and appropriately into the grown context, establishes the New School as a sustainable, public institution on site, which supports identification and social significance through its charisma as well as the strategic and creative intentions of the urban development master plan the city of peace.
In the heterogeneously grown district of St. Katharinen, the new building is positioned as a clear, orthogonal cubature, which in its even four-story volume creates clear spatial edges and sequences and thus contributes to the structural calming of the site. Between the polygonal course of the property boundary and the orthogonal shape of the new building volume, three forecourt situations develop along the contact areas with the city, which give the new campus a face to the city.
Through the expression of "joints", four structures are formed, each corresponding to a usage area. The New School will be scaled and integrated into the grain of the Katharinenquartier without losing its presence and importance in the urban fabric.
The arrangement of eaves-standing houses around a common center cites typologically historical monastery architectures and translates them into a modern ensemble in the middle of the diocese town, which respects and adapts the sloping roofs of the context.
Four houses take on the areas of learning 5-7, learning 8-10, administration / specialist teaching and sport. The two learning houses are connected to the administration / specialist teaching house via the adjacent joint structures.
The main entrance to the campus is in the hook street area, where the structure presents itself in the area of the built joint with a generous, building-high hall facing the city and conveys vertical and horizontal transparency in the development of the house. Joint structures take on a general development function and offer interaction and communication spaces for schoolchildren as well as for the teaching staff.
The ground floor zone presents itself as a common, permeable base for the entire campus, which integrates the outside space and, thanks to its character as a factory / market hall, which can be opened up to a completely flowing space together with the cafeteria and foyer, the willingness to cooperate strengthens in work. In addition, the profile of the house as a professional institution (“House of Crafts”) is communicated precisely and clearly to the outside world.
The learning houses, administration and specialist rooms unfold above the base zone. Here, through a sensitive, function-oriented arrangement of the rooms, regularly offset expansions are set, which enable natural lighting and mutual relationships with the surroundings.
